What happens when you discover your parents are actually evil supervillains?

Brian K Vaughan's PG Marvel comic is all kinds of fun! Starts off kind of average, but takes the time to properly develop each of the characters and really build an engrossing and action-packed story. Overtly set in the Marvel universe, the comic regularly references the heroes we all know and love, plus the X-Mansion gets a shout-out, and there is a great cameo of one of the better known Marvel heroes. Is it just me, or are cameos so much more fun than stories built around a known character?

Once a year Alex's parents force him to ignore what he really wants to do and spend time with the kids of ten of their friends while they do some bogus charity work. Nico, Karolina, Chase, Gertrude, and Molly aren't really his friends, but they're a constant in his life. When they accidentally discover that their parents are part of a shadowy supervillain group called The Pride, the group runs away, scared of what their parents will do to them and determined to stop them from any more evil-doing.

I've had the trade of the first volume or two of this for a while and absolutely loved it. I was overjoyed to see several volumes of the complete collection available at the library. Brian K. Vaughan can do no wrong in my book - I love Saga, Ex Machina, Y the Last Man, and Runaways of course. The premise and plot line are interesting and definitely appealing to young adults and adults. This establishing arc isn't bogged down with exposition or anything like that, but it's action adventure-y right from the start. While each of the characters has their own endearing qualities, it's really Gert who takes the cake. Her sarcastic remarks, purple hair and love for Old Lace that just give me the feels.
Also that thing with Chase at the end - didn't see that coming and LOVED IT. :)
I am for sure going to pick up the next complete collection volumes.

Super brilliant and inventive when it came out; I re-read this just to bask in the memories. Still as entertaining as I remember.
