when I read "Jurassic Park" and "The lost world" (and when I saw the three movies also) I really liked them. I was always a bit puzzled about Malcolm (played by Jeff Goldbloom in the movies) because he seemed to me, to have a too big part, for what he brought to the story.
This all changed when listening to "Prey" - which is an excellent book by the way.
Here it was made clear that the view Malcolm presented in "Jurassic Park" was exactly what the story was about, more than anything else, more than the dinosaurs, more than the family issues...
The point that we CANNOT control nature, no matter how smart we think we are.
This is very very clear in Prey. That stupidity may in the end - finish us off - Humans that is, because Nature will fight back - evolve us into the ground. And this book was from 2002.
Michael Crichton was a very talented writer and one brilliant thinker, if you ask me. Brilliant story. Not always that crazy about the way it was read. Strange pauses here and there - but still okay - and the story made up for any faults the reader had.

I'm pretty sure the first Michael Crichtom book I ever read was perhaps his most famous: "Jurassic Park" (back when I was still in school).
Why am I mentioning that fact? Since then, I've read many of his other thechno-thrillers (and one history thriller), none of which have really lived up to that first book. Of them all, however, this is perhaps the closest to doing so.
Taking the evolution of nano-technology as its basis, this novel can also be split into three distinct sections: the beginning (and end) sections at home, the wild strain in the desert wilds, and then the more evolved strain in the latter part. It's true that the ending doesn't quite tie-up with the beginning of the novel, but still a very enjoyable read.

It' s a science fiction/techno suspense thriller. Very on-brand for Micheal Crichton and very exciting until the last page.
