My heart is broken as an avid possum lover.

The March Book Club Pick.
I don't gravitate toward this genre. At all. My preconceived notions tend to keep me away: if I've read one book about a strong, but ultimately boring, protagonist fighting to survive in the woods, then I've read them all. Ashely's inner monologue was surprisingly compelling. She follows the tough character mold, but not in a way that feels stereotypical. The glimpses we got into her relationships made me cheer her on. Her revelations had weight and felt realistic in this wild situation. The book didn't hold any punches and I'm happy about that.

This young adult book reminded me of I Am Still Alive, but I didn’t like it as much. It has more questionable content that didn’t add much to the story.

Ashley has a bad night with her friends when she gets a surprise that sends her into the wild. Once there she must fight to survive and get back to her life, but will her years of experience in the woods be enough to get her back home?

This one is not for the faint of heart. Descriptions of injuries and survival in the wild are detailed and sometimes gruesome, but do go along to support the in depth character journey.

Think like mean girls meets Hatchet, which IS a compliment. It had a lot of gross stuff, some gore ya know, but I’m generally chill with that so it wasn’t too bad. The character development/arc felt like it could have been a biiiit better BUT that is not to say it wasn’t good. I liked it :)
