I want to start by saying that I read and absolutely ADORED Oliver and the Seawigs.
This one was disappointing. I had so many expectations because of how good Oliver was, how original and surprising and hilarious and refreshing it was. Cakes in space, in comparaison was... a bit boring really. The characters weren't as endearing, the story wasn't as fast-paced and interesting, the writing wasn't as funny.
I still think kids would love it (KILLER CUPCAKES for god's sake), and it's a good first read, but I'd definitely recommend Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre's other works.

Great fun and a definite possible guided reading for fluent readers in LKS2 or Y2. Fun, hilarious, deeply imaginative and does not take itself seriously at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.

The second in Reeve's Not-so-impossible series, which I liked better than the first one. The series looks like it doesn't keep recurring characters, just the theme of odd adventures.
This book takes place on a ship hurtling through space. Astra was supposed to sleep all the way to her new home on Nova Mundi, a planet far far away, but something woke her up. Maybe it has something to do with the request she made of the Nom-a-Tyron before she went to sleep, a request for the ultimate cake, a cake so good it was scary.
Then there are the aliens. Oh and a Nameless Horror. Not everything is as it seems, delicious pink icing could hide deviously sharp teeth and dark noodly appendages could have entirely good intentions. This one I could see as a selection for a junior book club. Funny, zany, somewhat similar to Daniel Pinkwater.

Adorable. Drawing all those monster cakes must have been very fun!
Some things I liked:
The main protagonist is a girl. Also, she's from a mixed-race family!
The name "Nom-O-Tron" made me laugh.
"I have had it with these blimmin' cakes on this blimmin' spaceship!"
The Poglite's folk song about spoons was also quite beautiful.
