Super tragic backstory that makes you fall in love with the main character. So many plot twists at the end; I could not take my eyes off of this book! 10/10 would recommend for people over the age of 15.

This book was phenomenal. The emotional build-up in the story, and the emotional bond the reader easily feels for Kya, was incredibly well-written. The first 50 or so pages may have been a little slow for me to get into, but I devoured the rest of the book within a day and a half. I just couldn’t put it down. I laughed, I smiled, I held my breath, I gasped - I felt so many emotions throughout the novel. The ending was also really well-done, and not what I expected.

I liked the book. It was right up my alley—coming of age, abandoned outcast girl one with nature from a broken home. The book was more evidence about how alcohol ruins people (140, wide print version). Made me cry numerous times. For those who liked this book too, I recommend “Mij’s Testament: Ailand” by Gail O. Dellslee.

Favorite quote:
“Imagination grows in the loneliest of soils” (41).

I got this book as a gift from my little sister, who doesn’t really read books but raves about this one. I went into it not knowing at all what it was about, but by halfway through I was obsessed. The imagery is amazing, I can feel and smell the swamp, I can visualize the old North Carolina court house and a marsh girl. I enjoyed this book a lot, it’s the kind of book that’s easy to get lost in and it’s like a movie in your head, and that’s all I’m ever looking for from a fiction book. For an easy and enjoyable read, I’d highly recommend. As far as the story, the story was enjoyable, and has just enough twists to say it’s a bit unpredictable.

This is such a beautifully written book that I can’t recommend enough. I was completely hooked by the story and suspense that I couldn’t put it down and I was constantly thinking about this book when I wasn’t reading it. The ending is perfectly designed in my opinion and it brought me to tears in the best way. Everyone should read this book.
