I had heard great things about this book but was personally disappointed. I found it to be quite slow and not compelling, and I wasn’t really invested in the characters. I do like that
she did it and got away with it

This was a beautiful poignant story and the way Kya is revered for her vivid and informative imagery so too are the words of this book. If you like your inspiring, against-all-odds type of stories that handle matters of the heart and a little bit of mystery then please indulge yourself in this poetic beauty.

The protagonist and setting draws you in from the very beginning and with short chapters it feels like a quick read. Although the story jumps back and forth between two different time periods it never felt confusing and got more and more suspensful when they started to connect. I had read somewhere that the author is a zoologist which is very apparent as a lot of the book focuses on describing the wildlife and fauna but it wasn't distracting but instead invited you into the point of view of the main character. While the overall pace felt rather slow it definitely picked up towards the end and while I was worried of being left with many questions, the last handful of pages answered a lot of them and left me just sitting in silence for a moment once I had finished the book.

It has its flaws but I mostly really enjoyed it. The author does a great job with describing the marsh and painting a very vivid image of it. Kya is an interesting protagonist to follow. The pacing was mostly good although a bit slow at the start.

I do gotta say that I thought it was a little silly to make one of the main themes prejudice towards a white girl when this book is set during a time of segregation. I feel like it would've fit the theme and narrative more if Kya was a POC. But maybe I'm just overthinking, idk.

Also I have mixed feelings about the ending reveal (major spoilers ahead).
I feel like it was a bit of a cheap twist and it also kinda ruined the whole prejudice towards Kya arc. Kya was all like "the whole village hates me and thinks I'm a murderer, oh woe is me"and then she actually is a murderer?? Girl, you kinda proved their point 😭 Chase absolutely deserved it tho but it does make make Kya a hypocrite. I kinda wish there had been a flashback chapter showing how Kya did it and how it affected her. Even tho Chase was horrible, I doubt Kya could've lived her whole life without feeling any guilt at all since she was so sensitive.
