Check the content warnings… I actually  nearly made it to the end but it really brought me down. Shame because it had so much potential, if only it hadn’t been so dark. This is not a book of hope, not to me. It just shows all negative aspects of humanity, not really what I needed in this time :(

This starts veeeeeerrryyyy slowly and really doesn’t get going until the last third. I enjoyed the ecological details and character development to a point - it was overly detailed. I felt the stereotypes were lazy: prejudice against Kya, Jumpin’ and his wife, the sheriff, the jock, the white villagers, etc. I also found it predictable. I’m surprised it was so popular.

Absolutely gorgeous storytelling and scenery. The reader would most definitely be able to distinguish the authors' love/knowledge of nature and animal behavior. I was so excited to pick up this book every time I would leave for my work commute. Highly recommend this novel to those seeking inner reflection about society, abandonment, wilderness and isolation, or anyone who loves swampy-marshy-salt-crust themes.

Some misgivings about the inaccuracies in dialect and geography and the requirements of suspending belief for a lot of the happenings, but easy to read and kept me interested.

This was so good. Kya is such an emotionally deep character with a powerful mind but has been judged her entire life, and her prospects of love, daring and fun, and her very-real mistakes, truly made her embody a real human spirit. The novel was able to be informative and teach the reader about things that they would never learn on their own (specifically about the marsh) while also tugging at our heartstrings, making us love Tate but despise Chase. The one critique I have is that the last 2 chapters of the book could have been 6.
I understand that the end of the book was not the premise of the story but was rather giving the readers fulfillment with an end to the story. It just felt very rushed compared to the rest of the story, but it also makes sense because the rest of her life was lived in peace, while the intense parts that the book is actually about required more detail.
Anyways, I loved the book!
