easily my favorite book this year.
it grabs you and does not let you go, and is such a great story and GORGEOUSLY told. I cried a lot while reading this book.
I think this is a book I'm gonna carry in my heart for a very very long time.

Very boring. It kinda picked up the pace in the second half but the ending was bland and sort of disappointing.

Thought this book was some sort of murder mystery based in a swamp. It wasn't really the plot, and this wasn't for me. Descriptions of the swamp, marshland and animals were vivid, but I was confused about Kya and her development. There was more about nature than her personal growth - which was so weird, how'd this girl become a biologist/poet all by herself! This book's great for nature-description lovers, not for me. I still was hooked because the book went back and forth from past to present and I was curious to see how things pan out.

I went into this book expecting it to be a mystery, and the book jacket and early chapters certainly make it seem like it is one, but it's not. This is a coming-of-age novel that happens to feature a murder. Maybe if my expectations were different I would have enjoyed it more, but the awkward flash-forwards to the murder investigation kept reminding me of what I thought the novel was going to be, and the main narrative of Kya's life was not compelling enough to make up for it. I wish it had focused more on Kya's relationships with her family and Jumpin' instead of the weird and uncomfortable romances with Tate and Chase. Again, I think expecting it to be more of a mystery really dampened my enjoyment of the novel, so if you like orphan/coming-of-age stories you'll probably enjoy this book. It just wasn't for me.

This made me want to get back into fiction again. I feel very particular about how an ending is delivered and this book’s ending, characters, and especially it’s use of time blew me away. Obsessed.

Beautiful storytelling, edge-of-your-seat mystery, and jarring character development. May leave your mouth agape at the end.

3.5 ⭐️, All i’ve heard about this book was that it was boring until half way through and then you can’t stop reading, I am not sure where that half way point was but I found myself trying to speed read the end of the book because I was just not interested in it, however I did like the plot in the last quarter of the book, it was very interesting and written well.
