The worldbuilding was genuinely scary, but the two main characters constantly making quippy jokes got old fast. Hated all the fanfic references, and at one point the main character talks about incest shipping which felt very unnecessary and gross. Liked Simon but wished we saw more of him as a rounded character vs just the MC's GBF.
Graphic: Body horror, Violence, Gore, Injury/Injury detail, and Medical content
Moderate: Confinement, Animal death, Blood, Child death, Death, and Fire/Fire injury
Minor: Antisemitism, Ableism, Incest, Sexual content, and Homophobia

'The Hollow Places' was a fun, slightly shallow, but very creepy and well written book. It wasn't Shirley Jackson's levels of writing but it was fun, gave me a creepy experience, and sometimes that's all you need. And it was heartwarming! Wow, I'm glad the author included that because it was a nice finishing touch on the story.
I do love the gay character and the friendship between him and the MC.
There were some aggravating / annoying things. Specifically:
Antisemitism content warning: "And theyโre right there reading it, so theyโre practically accomplices, unless theyโre one of those people who decide to leave comments telling you that shipping those two characters makes you worse than Hitler. "
This is not ok to put in a genuine novel. Save that shit for your goofy lil fandom spaces and fanfic writer notes. Or actually, do't. These type of jokes are just evil.
Honestly I hated that the author included stupid hit about fanfic at all. God I hope that's not going to become common in the future.
minor NSFW, poison,
medium antisemitism, emetophobia, marital infidelity, diseases, torture, arson, house fires, fire, unsanitary, animal neglect
major religion christianity / mormonism, taxidermy, unreality, gore, death, unsanitary, insects, body horror, military,
