ZO mooi en onverwachts ook zo eng - in 1 ruk uitgelezen terwijl ik langzaam steeds schrikkeriger werd van elk mini-geluid in huis.

An unconventional short story collection. A series of little passages set to black and white images from Leanne Shapton's personal collection, along with the occasional watercolor painting by Shapton. Slightly creepy, slightly disjointed, but always fascinating and creative.

This book is definitely worth reading. It's a sort of combination of short stories and art exhibit. Shapton's photos (which give the feeling of found photography) are combined with brief notes that often hint at darker doings. Frequently the feeling is of reading the photo insert within another book.

I can't decide if this is one that will stick with me, or if it'll ultimately be a half-remembered nifty trick. Right now I suspect the latter, but I may end up coming back in a couple months and adding a star.

Some of these pieces are moving, but too many fall flat, and the overall piece doesn't hold together. Maybe this is because Shapton's ghosts are not mine, but the found-photograph element seems contrived at times.

Cool creepy little book. I actually could not read it at bedtime, YMMV.
