Ok, this may be my new favorite book. Schwab may even become my new favorite author.

I’m not typically a fan of bouncing back and forth between past and present but Schwab does a fairly good job of it. I would say that, up until a certain point, the current events seem a little slow. Otherwise, it’s an effective way of getting to know the characters and their history.

And the characters are great. I love that no one is good. They’re morally grey at best. They’re complicated and messed up and somehow, despite some of them being superhuman, they are dreadfully human. Flawed, realistic, quirks of personality, they absolutely suck you in.

This book also has my all time favorite trope in any form of media: gruff man accidentally adopts child in need. There is also a dog. He is a good boy.

The story itself is gritty and exciting and very interesting. Would recommend this book left and right. Can’t wait to read the next one

In my eyes, this is a work of genius. There isn't a single boring character, I loved (or loved to hate) all of them. The plot is moving fast but not too fast: I, as a reader, couldn't get bored but events made sense and didn't come out of nowhere. Personally, I really enjoy narratives that jump between times, places, and/or characters - this book did all of that. Overall, great idea with amazing execution (pun intended).

“There are no good men in this game.”

Yet another fantastic book from Schwab. Between the sophisticated writing and puzzle piece like storytelling this book will have you hooked from the first page. Can’t wait to continue the series.
