A useful little book full of ideas on how best to make things last.
There's useful little exercises and there is plenty of advice for people wanting to live a more sustainable life.
If that sounded rather like a dull, dreary review (And it was, my gosh I had to bite my tongue as I wrote ever so formally up above), then you'll find the book is a bit like that too.
It's useful but it doesn't have PERSONALITY!
It's like a conglomeration of tips and tricks you could just as easily get off your favourite website for being thrifty and frugal.
So I WOULD recommend the book if you're stuck and needing a bit of a push on the bum to get started, but otherwise I'd also recommend just googling "sustainable living" and getting pretty much the same thing without the commitment of buying the book.
You decide!

This didn’t need to be a book, but I’m glad I know about the website now.
I have been on a real non fiction, self helpy book kinda binge at the moment. I just enjoy listening to them while doing other things.
The idea and the outline of this book is great. Buy less cheap shit quality stuff and invest in better quality items that will last longer that end up costing you less in the long run. Its something I have been wanting to do for such a long time, but we all know what I am going to say here... How many people have the money to do this? If we were all in a position to buy better quality items in life, I think its safe to say we all would be.
Ok, yes the talk of materialism in this book makes a point. Do we actually need to buy the item we have our eye on now or can we wait and save for the better quality version? Again I have these thoughts and as a mother and home owner when I have savings building up for the pair of winter boots I have been needing for 4 years and then my kid needs something or some unexpected bill pops up then the savings are gone on to that.
So in these cases I hate to say it often the cheap items get bought to fill that gap that is needed. Its not that I want the cheap item, its that I need clothes to keep me warm in winter and if I cant afford the good quality stuff, I have no real option than to buy the cheap shit that will only last a season.
All this being said. I agree with the book, i think its great and it makes great points but do I think its very realistic... no. Is there alot of plugging for the authors website and certain brands...yes. Which is not something I like to read in a book to be honest.
I think this book would be great for a teen or young adult who maybe has less financial responsibilities in life currently and can maybe have a good start at investing in quality items while they are young that will last throughout their lives so they aren't going to end up being stuck in the yuck cycle most of society is of wasting money away on crap.
I think this kind of thinking is for sure becoming a thing and trendy so I think alot of kids could benefit from reading it.

PICK. THIS. UP. NOW. Button starts this book with a strong study of manufacturing and consumer culture through the last few hundred years, citing studies that proved companies colluded to ensure products only worked for so long. She provides such a clear wake-up call to reconsider how I interact with the tangible objects around me. The second half of the book provides great templates and action plans for minimizing your home and buying (and taking care of) quality products that will last as long as possible, if not a lifetime.
And check out her website, BuyMeOnce.com - it is a living space dedicated to recommendations on high quality products and strong warranties, to give you some research points as you seek out better alternatives to our throwaway culture. Could not be more grateful for her dedication to this mission. I have certainly been changed for life!

A great read! I highly recommend the audiobook.
I understand the criticisms some people have over the perhaps forced plug of the author’s blog and company, but it didn’t bother me. If anything, I’m happy to hear about this person achieving to create a space for a Life Less Throwaway.
It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s that one push that I think most people need in order to shed some light onto the very real environmental problems we are facing in this century.

Thanks to this book I now wash my jeans inside-out and hang them to dry...
Super thought provoking. Why don’t we make choices with an eye to durability? Why are we okay with the lifespan of a washing machine *decreasing* dramatically over the past few decades? Why don’t we resist the allure of fast fashion (that harms the environment and the people making it)? Why don’t we replace retail therapy with activities that are truly better for us?
This is a valuable reference book, and I recommend the author’s website and passion project BuyMeOnce.com.

The audience for this book is a limited subset of affluent consumers. For those with the resources to purchase what they need or want, it’s primarily an advertisement for the buy me once website and secondarily a self-help guide to find one’s purpose in life.
