Beren and Lúthien was simply stunning.
It's not the most accessible read in Tolkien's Middle Earth, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you're a Tolkien fanatic. However, it's a beautiful romance, one of Tolkien's best, told through the different versions he wrote throughout his life. The deep meaning it had to Tolkien (and his son) is clear throughout the texts and his love for his wife Edith, the inspiration for Lúthien, fills the story .
My personal favourite version of the story was the Lay of Leithien, and it's a tragedy Tolkien never finished his verse form of the story. The hunt of Carcharas, death of Beren, Lúthien's plea before Mandos, and their return to Middle Earth would have been incredibly beautiful and a poignant addition to this epic tale.
I am incredibly grateful Christopher Tolkien took the time and care to edit this book together. It's a highly successful look at the development of one of JRRT's most beloved stories from the First Age, and I enjoyed watching the tale change from the Tale of Tinúviel into the epic romance it became by the end of JRRT's life. It was a pleasure to read and I'm sorry it's over.

This book admittedly is for Tolkien fans as it’s not the whole story of Beren and Luthien. It’s more like reading Tolkien’s drafts of the story with Christopher’s notes and comments in between. I’m glad this book exists but it does make me sad that Tolkien never published this story as I think it’s a beautiful tale of lovers going on adventures together. My only real gripe is how Luthien swoons at really odd moments, which is probably just due to the time Tolkien was writing the story, but it’s a little frustrating when the rest of the story she is very bad-ass.
Really love the story, and it's interesting to see how it's a bit autobiographical and mirrors some aspects of Tolkien's life. The parts in verse were wonderful.

Die Geschichte von Beren und Luthien an sich ist im Grunde schnell erzählt. Die vielen Details und Ausschmückungen in Versform waren daher zum Teil redundant und nicht ganz so schön übersetzt, wie ich es gewollt hätte. Ich konnte das Buch wegen seiner umständlichen Ausformulierungen nicht wirklich genießen. Mit Sicherheit ist die englische Fassung besser.
