Enjoyable read, really gives a start into the middle earth history

This book has a nice collection of texts that came before the version that is in the Silmarillion. I especially enjoyed the fragments from the Lay of Leithian, and I liked that the battle between Fingolfin and Morgoth was included as well. The illustrations were very beautiful and kind of merged you in the story.

That being said I don’t think owning this book is necessary. You can get all the information on Beren and Lúthien by reading the Silmarillion. But if you are a Tolkien collector I think this book is nice to have
