I think my head is reeling from all the things that happened in this book. It was so strange reading this book after Home and seeing things from Mickey’s perspective after reading it from Myron’s. Sometimes when I read a book from a teenagers perspective, I forget I’m an adult and not a teen anymore and want to throttle the kid. But this was written from a teens point of view so keeping that in mind, it was written exceptionally well - the teen voice was definitely there and same with the attitudes/decisions. There was a lot to unpack in this book - Mickey dealing with his dads death, his mom being a junkie, new school, bullying, girlfriend who disappeared and a lot more. There were a lot of unanswered questions which will hopefully happen in book 2. I’m so impressed with Harlan Coben. Another masterful book.
Meet Mickey Bolitar, the slightly older detective equivalent to Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer. Mickey's life is in shambles: he recently watched his father die in a car accident, his mother is in rehab for drug addiction, his girlfriend has disappeared and he's forced to live with an estranged Uncle, Myron. On his way to school one morning a spooky neighbor known as "Bat Lady" calls out to Mickey, telling him his father is alive. Mickey is frightened, but hopeful. What does this strange woman know about his father? And if he's alive, where is he?
Mickey throws himself into the search for his girlfriend, Ashley, who appeared to completely vanish only a few short weeks after she and Mickey started the school year as new students. He enlists the help of two unlikely sidekicks-- mysterious, goth-girl, Ema and quirky, nerd-boy Spoon. The three find themselves caught up in a dangerous underworld with connections to "White Slavery" and Nazi Germany, but they also learn that Mickey's parents had secrets of their own, secrets that connect them to Bat Lady.
Does Mickey find Ashley? Is Mickey's dad really alive? And who is Bat Lady? Read Harlan Coben's suspenseful thriller, Shelter to find out.

Didn’t realise this book was YA when I started it so found it a bit basic but was really easy to fly through!
Story line was OK just a bit too simple for me.

I wanted something a bit different from his first two novels and this definitely delivered. It was a bit like Hardy Boys which was kind of cool and felt like a throwback. While I knew I was reading a YA book sometimes I felt like his writing style didn’t match up but overall it was enjoyable.
not as strong as some of the author’s adult fiction works, but a decent foray into ya. i appreciated that diversity wasn’t always a throwaway mention, but often integral to character and plot. i am pretty fuzzy on the timeline of the last chapter reveals… like, how are they even still alive? wouldn’t they be like a hundred? especially the final reveal?
Now I know that I am a fast reader, usually reading at least one book a day, but I absolutely devoured this book. I think in total it took me an hour and half to read it. That is fast, even by my standards. After having read the book all I have to say is why haven't I read a novel by Harlan Coben before?
I was hooked from the first page and when I finished the book, I immediately wanted to read another one. Unfortunately, Shelter is Harlan Coben's first forray into writing a YA novel. Having said that, I really hope he writes another one. The novel was the perfect blend of suspense, intrigue, humor, and sensitivity. The character's, who were all very different, came across as authentic and real in both their relationships and interactions.
The protagonist Mickey is currently living with his uncle Myron after having lost both his mother and father in some shape or form. Mickey is both a likeable character and an honourable one. He has a tremendous sense of right and wrong, and a very deep social conscience that is not usually displayed at his age. He, despite the recent trials and tribulations he has been through, remains steadfast in the belief that you should help those who are in need despite the personal cost, and displays this throughout the novel on his search for his missing girlfriend.
All in all, I found this a very enjoyable and easy read. It can get a bit suggestive at times, but it's really nothing more than you would see on TV in any primetime show.

I really wanted to like the story. I liked Mickey, and the tone, and the overall plot. But it felt a bit rushed, like too many corners were taken that with a bit more time would have closed some loopholes and made the plot work. I know it's YA - but for instance the last scene in the gogo club resolved itself too easy and wasn't realisitc to me. I won't go into details so as not to spoil.
I understand what HC is setting up - and I like the idea of a series based on this Shelter idea as well as the search for what happend to his father - so I will give the book another try. I'll also let my daugther read it to see what she thinks. Maybe it's just a YA book, that doesn't make the leap into adult reading for me.

This was incredibly suspenseful and a ****ing CLIFFHANGER. Had some serious depth, more so than might be appropriate for middle school readers, who initally recommended this to me. Must get second book ASAP.
