Wanted to fill in one of the big missing details in the Myron Bolitar series. Not a bad YA series. Lots of cliches and stereotypes, but I can see the appeal to encourage young, male reluctant readers with a series like this. Mickey, is, of course, a miniature of Myron. A fast read - I'll read all three just to know the storyline - but likely mostly forgettable otherwise.
OMG! I just finished this book, and all I can say is that I can not wait to read more! It was so awesome, so many twists and and turns, so many mysteries within mysteries, that I kept reading and reading and then the next thing I knew the book was done, and I was like what? wait? no, not yet!
This was just an excellent book, and it was the first time I had read this author and I was loving it. I just can not get over how much I loved this book. I can't even think what to say about the book at this point, I am still so amazed at the book, at the masterful way it was told, at the way I got carried away and involved in the characters. I could feel everything Mickey was going through, I related to Ema, and I even understood Spoon. It was such a wonderfully told story, with so many twist and turns, but yet it was followable. I never got lost in the story, things unfolded in different waves, but it all made sense.
Of course, the end had me yelling out NO and wait...I'm not ready for it to end, I want to know more about Mickey and Lizzy and even Myron. There are just so many questions left to be answered, but even more, it was that I connected with the characters and I wasn't ready to leave them.
I was so excited to be selected as a First-Reads giveaway winner and get this book. It was an bonus for me, I got to encounter a new author, and found a book that I loved! Thank you Good Reads!!

I don't read a lot of YA novels, although readers I respect tell me I am missing some great story-telling. This book bears that theory out. Read as a YA novel, it introduces some big ideas (abuse of young girls, loss of a parent, the Holocaust) and plot twists. It's not original stuff, relying on stock characters and the typical danger-and-rescue thriller climax, but it's solid writing with touches of humor and the presence of Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar, acting all parental, is a bonus for adults and long-time fans. As a marketing ploy? Score!
As a pop novel,I kept reading. And there's a mist-shrouded mystery embedded in the last few pages. As literature, not so much.

I don't even know how to express how awesomely good this book was. Only 2 days so take a guess. Brilliant!
I am late to the game of reading the Mickey Bolitar books from Harlan Coben and I'll admit I picked up the trilogy from library after watching the first couple of episodes of the new TV series. SHELTER was a fast-paced mystery packed with a range of characters, subplots, and drama, but also a nice balance of humor, complex family dynamics, and evolving friendships.
There's a lot going on in this book, but at its heart it's about family, secrets, loyalty, and loss. Mickey is a young teen who's recently lost his father in a tragic accident and who's temporarily living with an uncle he doesn't know that well because his mother is in rehab. He's the new boy in school but he when he meets the new girl, Mickey has a bit of hope. Maybe things will start to improve. Of course, everything goes wrong. The new girl disappears, he's become a target for a couple of bullies, and the freaky Bat Lady tells him his dad is still alive.
SHELTER was a quick read for me and I liked it enough that I'll read the next book in the series.

5 hard to stop eating oatmeal butterscotch chip cookies.
Cover Love: It's ok. Definitely holds a hint of mystery.
Why I Wanted to Read This:
I read the first chapter online and I like the idea of an adult mystery writer writing for YA. Some of them turn out really good.
I Kept Reading Because: I actually couldn't stop reading!
Romance?: No, but some potential for one.
What I Liked (& Didn't):
First off, I loved Mickey. Great teenage, male character. Slightly super hero-ish, very good-hearted and smart. He is just plain made of awesome. If I was in high school I would want him to be my boyfriend for sure.

This was a lot better than I'd expected. I knew it was a young adult novel by Harlan, and I went to a book signing/speaking for this book. He's a nice guy, super tall, and funny. This book was great! I seriously couldn't put it down, and when I did, I didn't want to. There were twists and turns that you didn't know were coming, and the fact that he honestly eavesdropped on his children to get the high school dialogue correct is just too much! :)
3.5 ⭐
I don't think the plots were mind-blowing, but the book itself was pretty good and the writing is very addictive!
I'll be continuing the series
