A funny, sexy, and scarily relatable read. Though surprised by the mixed formatting of text and comic(I judge a book by its cover) I loved it! This is a book that I could point to and say, โYou want to understand me better? Read this.โ Except I havenโt boosted my confidence and found my HEA quite yet.
I may update to 5 stars later but Ranking lower because it could have easily cut 10 stories as they got repetitive and the end lacked a final gut punch story. However, this has already changed the way I view myself and the world so still an amazing read

not my favourite. there were some stories that i liked more than others, but i didn't get a lot of the geek references. the margaret atwood comic was pretty short and basic. because of the formatting of the ebook, it was sometimes difficult to tell when one entry ended and another began (esp. when comics and prose appeared concurrently). i read this because of rotimi.

As a lover of comics, fantasy and sci-fi I was super excited to I picked up this anthology - a book devoted to girls/women like me was enough to induce girlish giggles as I left the library. About 4 stories/comics in, I was bored. To be more exact, I rolled my eyes, closed the book and put it in my bag to take it back. Maybe it's the non-romantic in me that was expecting loves to be more than a significant other, maybe it was expecting grappling action of fighting for things/interest/values/persons that you love but the book never delivered.

Honestly this book was a let down for me. I like the diversity of the authors but the stories themselves to me for the most part fell flat. Most of the writing felt like several Tumblr posts strung together and several of the stories felt redundant. If I was given this when I was in high school I probably would have enjoyed it more but as an adult it just didn't do the job for me. The sheer number of stories in this 280 page book is a little overwhelming and yet the stories themselves underwhelmed me. No disrespect if you enjoyed it but I just didn't.

Kinda all over the place, but I blame that mostly on the changing media and how many contributors there were. I feel like it would have benefited by dividing and expanding.

A book full of Geeky girls, fanfiction, sexuality, sex, romance, love and much more. Not only wordier parts, but also a lot of comics.
Though I have to say it took me a long time to get through this one. Normally I fly through shorter books like this, but all in all (counting all the times) I spend about 4 to 5 hours on a 256 pages book... o.0
Yes, it was good. Yes, I did like it. That is why I am still rating it a 4 star, because the book deserves that. I am still really glad I read this one, that I bought this one on the whim and hope it was good. I am still happy that this one is going to be in my collection.
But there were quite few parts that I didn't like. For instance the wordier parts. I knew they would be there (duh, it is mentioned everywhere), but I still hoped for more comics. Not that comics were always perfect, there were a few that I didn't quite like, but still I wouldn't have minded more comics.
The wordier parts really took me the longest to read. Two days ago I decided to just read the fun parts (as I would call the comics that) and then just read the 70-ish wordier parts later. Which turned out to be a two day (about 30 minutes and an hour) trial.
Yes, the wordier parts turned out to be OK for most of the time, but I really had to force myself to read them. It was like I just couldn't get myself to read them. It was like something was stopping me. Maybe it was because most of the wordier parts just had the same overall message. I know this probably sounds rude, everyone has had their unique experience in love and geekdom, but for me it felt quite often the same. I would read x story, then go to y, and it was almost the same just wrapped in different words. It is just a shame.
But I did feel connected with quite a few of the stories, with the comics. I am also a big geek girl and I know that back when I was a teenager it wasn't always easy to like stuff like Dragon Ball, or anime, or games. Like with what other stories also said, I often couldn't connect well with my peers. Sure, I was interested in boys, and I loved boybands/girlbands, but still I couldn't care about all the latest trends, clothes, or tv-shows. Well, unless those tv-shows were the geeky kind, like Star Trek. :P
So yeah, I am definitely happy that I read these story, and that I see there are more people like me.
All in all, I quite enjoyed this book, and I would still recommend it to all the geeky girls in the world!

I am not sure that this strictly counts as a Canadian book but there are a number of Canadian writers in this collection. Some of these stories and comics I loved and others I found were the same old stories of dating. I did love the discussion of geekness!

Anthologies are always the hardest thing for me to rate because the stories are so mixed!
My top 3:
Regards to the Goblin King by Megan Kearney 5/5๐
Cherry by Cherelle Higgins 4.5/5๐
Mechanism by Meaghan Carter 4.5/5๐

I struggle to finish non-fiction when it isn't in graphic novel form a lot of the time, the library labelled this as a graphic novel but it was more 50% graphic novel. I appreciated the takes on queerness and fandom, naturally, but there was a lot of writing for something where I was trying to be in more comic mode and I may pick this up again sometime in the future. But not right now
Graphic: Racism and Physical abuse
Moderate: Infidelity
