Not going to lie...this was a really hard read for me. I only understood what was going on maybe like 1/4 of the book. Only reason I was able to finish was I did the audiobook and Toni's voice is amazing to listen to. That being said I do understand why this is such a classic because of the subject matter and there were parts that stood out to me. Like the part where the grandmother was telling about how she picked her own name because she had never been given one. Heartbreaking...even the poorest person has their name. Another is the mom saying how age has nothing to do with it...her children will always be her babies. I've seen there is a movie made after the book so I would like to see it to see it come to life and understand it a little more. If you come across my review, let me know what you think!

Easily the most depressing book I have ever read or will ever read and that does include the many Holocaust historical fiction and non-fiction I've read. Don't let the title mislead you! The writing is brilliant and exquisite and while Morrison herself reads the audiobook I feel I would have done so much annotating and rereading had I read a physical copy. The ghosts of slavery live on for so many generations...
