I was hoping the ending would make this book worth the read, but I was disappointed. It seems the book just creates an allegory to explain that life is just death in increasing increments, and I didn't find that interesting in the least.

The bastard did it again . . . His style will take some getting used to . . . But in between all the muck and shit and viscera of the scum of the earth as Céline saw it . . . there are moments of prose that will break your heart.

I firmly believe Céline's work is worth engaging with . . . keeping a critical mind of his historical moment and the actions he did and the things he said . . . while also grappling with his novels in their context and acknowledging their stylistic innovations . . .

Céline's writing can be challenging to get through at times, for me, but I find his portrait of the world fascinating for its combination of nihilism and beauty.

Parisian slums in the early part of the 20th century were a real drag.
