I love the language of “reimagining.” Inspiring story and education on how to better serve your own values.

Beautiful, inspiring, educational. I'd like to know this woman and her work more. Definitely someone who qualifies as "having pulled herself up by her bootstraps." Hate that retort from racists who insist their privilege had nothing to do with their success, even fail to acknowledge any privilege they have, point out where they don't have it (e.g., I'm a woman, I have a disability, I am poor, etc.), and believe fully that it was all due to their own hard work, and why can't the Black, Brown, Indigenous, and otherwise not-white people do the same.

For additional reading regarding what it is to be a Black feminist, I also recommend reading Brittney Cooper's Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower.

Great advice, good historical contexts, and an ecosystem built by the author in pursuit of a better, more just future. Loved this book.

I want to thank Goodreads and Rachel Elizabeth Cargle for a complimentary copy of A Renaissance of our Own for an honest review.

Honestly, this is the first time that I ever heard of Rachel Cargle. I really enjoyed the book. While it was an enjoyable read, I took my time with the book so that I could think about what she was writing. I know that she dedicated this book primarily to Black women, but as an Asian American, I feel like I got a lot out of this book as well. I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in feminism, activism, education, teaching, relationships, and self growth.

Rachel Cargle is an activist I’ve found inspirational for some time, and I was excited to hear more about her story. While I wished I could have heard more immersive memories from her experiences and relationships, I really appreciated how this book neatly outlined her journey of reimagining. She simplifies the process of centering your life around your values in ways that feels realistic and practical. I also deeply appreciated the way she lives with intention and describes the need to understand people’s intersectionality.

I admire the way this memoir morphed into a manifesto with active journaling prompts and ways to engage with the content, but I also wish it had either been positioned as an educational text or a memoir - the mixing of the two don’t land for me as much as I had hoped but the message was strong nd clear.
