4.25⭐️1🌶️(mostly closed door, very few sex scenes, several tension-filled scenes)
This had been on my TBR for 4 years and idk what took me so long. People either love or hate this book and this series in general and I liked it a lot! I will say the beginning 20% is pretty slow, it took me a couple weeks to get through that and then I read the last 80% in less than 24hrs. I read along with the graphic audiobook and that version shuffles some inner monologue and dialogue around to make conversations flow, so I’d suggest the regular audiobook first and the graphic audio for a reread. I really didn’t find the book spicy at all, I think this could be appropriate for YA readers, but I’ve heard the rest of the series is spicier. Another thing: why does everyone hate tamlin?? He’s a pretty decent guy and takes care of FMC and her family when he doesn’t need to. I can see the rhys hype, he’s the misunderstood villain bad boy who I predict will be an enemies to lovers in the future and his fan art is🥵. Some of the book is gory and graphic, I would classify this as a dark romantasy with plenty of fluff. I would definitely reread in the future and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!

This is what I’m into right now, and listening to this recently … I flew right through it.

*** spoilers ***

A Court of Thorns and Roses gets 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me. Were there a lot of predictable moments in this book? Yes. Did that lessen my opinion or experience with it? No. I enjoyed the world building, the adventure that comes on fairly quickly, and the themes of ignorance, prejudice, bias and vulnerability and love that unfold throughout this first volume.

I enjoyed the relationship building between Feyre and Tamlin. And I grew to love Tamlin and believed in the Spring Court misconceptions about some of the other high fae *cough* * cough* *Rhysand* so overall, I thought the storytelling was wonderful.

Sarah Maas tells the story, and pretty much always gives the reader the outcome that’s hoped for, which I enjoy right now. (Though there are some much appreciated twists and turns that I don’t always foresee.)

Probably the most obvious mystery that I solved immediately was guessing the answer to Amarantha’s riddle. However, I still enjoyed all the under the mountain struggles and events. And again, the presence of some predictability wasn’t a negative for me. (I think I’m in a mood lately where I don’t need a heightened sense of anxiety with some absolutely, outrageously novel fantasy story. This is hitting the spot for me where I’m at right now, in a stressful chapter of life.)

Honestly, I didn't like this book. I'm usually easy to please but I felt this book dragged out for so long. 2/3 of it felt like nothing happened.

*Spoiler alert*

The most interesting part were the trials. And mostly the first and the third cause I'm still not over the dumb logic on the second trial.

I'm giving it a 1 cause I liked Lucien and I liked Alis. They were my saving grace thoughtout the book. So 0.5 per each but I feel too generous. Plot wise, it would be zero.

And last, in terms of chemistry, sorry not sorry, I though Feyre had more chemistry with Lucien than Tamlin. I know he wasn't even an option, but he should have been ✨.

Re-entering my Sarah J. Maas era with A Court of Thorns and Roses. It took me SO long to start this series because I just KNEW I was going LOVE it and Maas did not disappoint. I’m completely obsessed with the characters and their dynamics. I wasn’t sure how I felt about this being a bit of a beauty and the beast retelling, but I actually think that framework helped focus the reader on the differences, since we had a good understanding of where the plot was going (at least in part). This allowed the reader to take in the aspects of Prythian, and comfortably place themselves into this new world of the fae. I really loved the pacing of this book and thought the development felt natural. I definitely got some other classic literature references/inspirations outside of beauty and the beast as well—which I was really excited about. Overall, if you’re a fan of Fantasy, Romance, and mild spice, this book is definitely for you. I know I cannot WAIT to see where the rest of the series takes us.
