an absolutely phenomenal book, it was a little longer than other books i’ve read but i tore through it really fast. i felt such a deep connection and sympathy for all the characters, except phillips’s parents, they’re downright evil. but the relationship between life and death was so blurred and that’s what i loved about it. death isn’t something to be afraid of, but rather a reflection of life, a celebration of life, it helps us grow and blossom and view life a different way, which is something we all need to do once in a while. i loved violette’s character, she was a victim and grew into something even bigger and stronger, even after everything she went through… which was a lot. the ending was so perfect and gratifying, you can’t help but to feel immense sympathy with the characters. you feel their pain, their love, their regrets, their anger, their hopefulness or hopelessness. relationships are intertwined. everything just flew together so perfectly, and even though this book was organized but jumping through different timelines, it was still really easy to understand and catch on to, and how it flows beautifully either to present or past time. one of my new favorite books, a beautifully illustrated tragedy, about what it is to be human.

Way too many details. I suppose many of them would have made sense if I were familiar with French culture,  but still could have easily been 300-400 pages is all.
