I completely lost it when General Patton showed up talking about reincarnation with this absolutely random shanty town girl . Completely took me out of any immersion I was desperately trying to hold onto. The entire book felt like author was trying to give the main character every traumatic experience they could think of for this historical era. It was too much and wildly unrealistic. I barely made it through as much of the book as I did.

So exciting to start a new Stephenson series! Really enjoyed this one and meeting all the characters! The main character Dawn is amazing, and it's great to follow her on her adventures around the world into so many different cultures. Stephenson's careful research and gift for worldbuilding take you right into places like the Century of Progress World's fair in Chicago, and the early Soviet Union. My only problem with this book was that it was so short! Can't wait for the next one.
