Turgid and directionless. When Stephenson’s on, he is a master. When he’s not, it’s this book.

I should start by saying that Stephenson is one of my favorite authors and what I love about his books is their awe-inspiring scope and ideas. This books is not that. It’s a pretty entertaining work of historical fiction that fleshes out some important and interesting events, but it could have been written by lots of other people; there is nothing particularly Stephensonian about it. So in that sense it’s a disappointment.

I am so glad I am not alone in thinking this isn't really a story but more of a smattering of historical - fiction points put together through the lens of a character I'm still not sure about. I had to stop and look up if I was reading this book out of order that's how lost I was at times. This is the same author as Snow Crash!? Now that I think of it...the raft/floatilla scenes in that book confused me too...
