What a strong fucking start. That first chapter rips off the page with such clarity and bite that I went WOW as I biked home from the Bulgarian dance class. And then I said "Wait, are they going to go to Magnitogorsk?" and the next chapter begins "Magnitogorsk 1935" and I SCREAMED. The back cover of this book reads like a Mad Libs game, but Stephenson does a really good job tying it all together, surprisingly, and this first book acts like a prequel to our protagonist for the rest of the series, I assume. She's a bit unbelievable in always being on the right side of things, but I'll read anything that ties together so many fun locations and snappy '30s dialogue

I was already struggling with how little I care about polo, but it just got to a point where I know I was reading the words, but I couldn't follow what was going on. Sci-fi is really my bread and butter, and I knew this was trying something outside my wheelhouse.
