Another great adventure in the Vorkosigan series. Nothing too deep going on here, just a well written fun adventure in space, very similar to Miles' previous outing. While neither of his books so far have reached the heights for me of Cordelia "Bad Bitch" Naismith, he is still a great protagonist and has thankfully moved past his sometimes sulky moods from the last one. I was not expecting a return to the Dendarii so soon here, perhaps Barrayer gave me the wrong impression of non-space stuff (as the other three books have all prominently featured space battles).

Such an odd book. I was actually very excited when, about a third of the way in, it looked it like it was going to be a murder mystery. Nope! Space war strategy, slash character-driven comedy/drama. Sure, why not, that seems on brand for this series. More the plot/arc pacing you'd expect from a series of TV than a novel.

4.5 stars. I do wish I had known that the first 25% of the book is the Novella "Weatherman". I think if I had dug around in the reviews first, I would have seen something. Anyway, skipped most of that part of the story and headed to the real part of the adventure.
I have to say- Miles doesn't just get into trouble- "oh whoopsie!"
No- he is a bonafide Trouble Magnet. Cordelia had to have had some idea of what mischief her son would be getting into and yet she let him loose in the world anyway. What fun stories.
Lots of the technical jargon and the "who is who" type things are hard for me to retain interest in but the stories always come back to Miles and his amazing chutzpah. He is longing for a ship command and somehow stumbles back into his Admiral Naismith persona.
I enjoyed seeing Elena again, getting to know Gregor and them seeing Miles in a new (and strong) way. He definitely has a subordination problem. The main story centers around "what to do with Miles" and the missing Emperor as he literally stumbles into scenarios that would level a lesser man.
Its funny, ironic and unexpectedly tender.
My favorite part? When it is revealed that the Regent (his father Aral) took 2 hour lunches to go home and spend time on the floor with his son. His son who could not walk and needed massive medical attention. He was firm and loving- what a wonderful addition to their story.
I am hanging in there for Miles' romance- I can't wait!
