I picked up and put this down too many times to have a super clear impression of it in my mind but I enjoy Miles escaping dire situations by the skin of his teeth and Elena and Gregor's personalities get a little more time to shine in this book, which makes later developments in the series more rewarding. As I've been reading the series out of order, it was also nice to get some of the missing pieces of Miles' narrative, especially his problems with cold and how the Dendarii came to be on Barrayaran imperial retainer. Surprised this won the Hugo! The space battles are fun and there are some interesting themes in e.g. the comparisons between Miles and Cavilo, but overall I didn't find it as exciting or challenging as other books in the series.

I really liked this book and the only thing that bugged me was the cover art illustration that depicted a scene that never really happened in the book!
It was great reading about the adventures of Miles Vorkosigan!

I was told that the early Miles Vorkosigan books were a bit rough/didn't hold up, but this one at least was a rollicking good time. I loved the relationship between Miles and Gregor, and Gregor trying to figure out his life. it made me want to go back and read the book(s?) I missed between the Cordelia ones and this. just a fun time.

Four stars for the first 1/3 (Weatherman), three stars for the rest (too many spaceship battles, I must confess I just can't keep up / keep invested when ships confront each other. I think Miles should just have medical emergencies during every battle so I'm spared the details, but that's just me).

Main impressions from this volume:
I low-key ship Aral with everyone (monogamy is passe).
I prefer planetary politics and intrigue to hijinks and any other jinx in space (how unsurprising).
I'd quite like more time / attention spent on female characters (or Bel).

I'm going to consider taking a break from Vorkosigans for the sake of reading other things but we'll see how that works out.
