Another fun Miles Vorkosigan adventure. For this book, you should definitely have read the ones before, or it won't make as much sense or be as fun to read. This book's strong points, like the others in the series, are the way it combines action with excellent character development, and the way Bujold is able to manage a large cast without resorting to stereotypes or cardboard cutout characters. Her world, too, feels fully developed, and we get to see a lot more of it in this book. I don't think this one is quite as good as The Warrior's Apprentice or the first two starring Miles's mother, but it's still quite excellent.
A little bit of a re-tread of [b:The Warrior's Apprentice|61906|The Warrior's Apprentice (Vorkosigan)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170597854s/61906.jpg|2792], this instalment allows Bujold to expand her viewpoint outwards from Barrayar to show the wider worlds within which Miles operates. There are a couple of pacing issues, and there are times when I wished that Bujold was a little more subtle with the characterisation points she was making, but this was still a fun, if rather light, space opera romp.

Funny, smart and with great pacing. This is Miles at his best. Bujold really created characters and a universe I like. The politics and mechanics of it are interesting, without ever becoming too serious. A really great read.

I'm working through the series, and again, I enjoyed it (although my favourite is, I think, Barrayar). It feels like a fun TV series with a likable cast, plenty of action, twists and turns, it's not too dark, but also not too silly, it's that sweet spot in the middle of just plain fun. I like that Miles generally has to apply his wits to solve problems instead of whacking at the enemy with a larger or more sophisticated stick.
(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!
