The Vorkosigan books have quickly become among my favorite sci fi, but I found this one not quite as wonderful as some of the others. Miles is still charming with a self-deprecating humor that balances well his quick intellect and ability to awesomely get out of all kinds of sticky situations. But I got bogged down in the politics and the battles--maybe they were on too broad a scale. I missed some of the more personal interactions of "The Warrior's Apprentice" and "Shards of Honor." Still a good, fun space opera with great characters.

Woo-hoo Space Cowboy underdog wins in the end. What's not to love.

I'm continuing to work my way through the epic and badly-covered series of regency sci fi adventures. Miles is the best protagonist, I have All Of The Feelings about emperor since he was a child Gregor, and I am very excited to catch up with A Civil Campaign, which is book #12, and I read first, so everything actually makes sense.

Straightforward rollicking space opera. Lots of twists and turns to the plot, layers of military strategy and enough humor to keep me snorting throughout. Miles is wonderful, and he's made even better by the strong supporting cast.

I didn't like this one as much as [b:the Warrior's Apprentice|61906|The Warrior's Apprentice (Vorkosigan)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170597854s/61906.jpg|2792]. It was hard to tell who exactly was attacking whom, and why, and where exactly we were.
Even so, it's a pretty damn entertaining read.

Just as engrossing as the previous books in the series, though perhaps a tad long. A couple of decisions by Miles just seemed designed to set up additional books instead of something natural that arose from the plot. Still, Bujold is astonishingly talented.

More over the top adventures of Miles, you should probably read "The Warriors Apprentice" first. This aged better than I thought it would, it's a bit more serious, probably why it won a Hugo.
