Another adventure of Miles Vorkosigan, featuring the Dendari Mercenaries, and this time involving his childhood friend, Gregory, the Emperor of Barrayar. Miles must out-maneuver an equally cunning leader of a rival mercenary group for the life of his friend and the good of his planet.

It was a fun adventure, full of twists and turns, and one very satisfying villain.

The only critisism that I will voice about this particular book is the discussions about various factions. They got a bit convoluted at times.

Another great reread. Love these books so much!

I feel like it's been a very long time since I read a plot driven story that wasn't trying to be anything more than a plot driven story that was THIS good. The story was nothing more complex than a series of months in Miles' life; no grand thesis, or political commentary, or deep character study, or sweeping epic. And yet the characters are fantastically written, the stakes are tense, the solutions delightful, the humor on point, and I was hooked (as they say) from page one. 4.5/5 rounded up. Excited for the next one.

My opinion of this book suffered somewhat given I waited so long between reading sessions that I ended up feeling a little lost when I would pick it back up. But the impressive thing is the ability Bujold has to take several complex threads, many characters, galactic politics, spies, and a command of the English language beyond my own, and weave them into an entertaining and ultimately enjoyable story nevertheless. I also kept wondering, why did this book win the Hugo award? Maybe precisely because of what I just wrote. Also it has been a while (if ever) that I have seen the characters "&etc" written as a legitimate word in a book! Now that I think I've finished the mixed ordering reading (reading them out of chronological order, because I'm reading them in publication order, or trying to anyway) of early Miles adventures, I think from here on out they are both chronological and publication order synchronized....

Was going to give it 4 stars but got bored towards the end. It felt like a classic fast paced scifi to me. I enjoyed it.

Larga vida a Miles.

Read at least three times throughout the years. The last time is the one in the read dates.

It's easy to see why THE VOR GAME received the Hugo in 1991--this second novel of Miles Vorkosigan is even wilder and more intricate than THE WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE. There were so many scenes in this book that were so positively delicious I re-read them several times before continuing to the next chapter. Ever true to his motto of "forward momentum", Miles sets events toppling one after the other in increasing proportions that leave his companions, commanders, and me entirely dizzied and dazzled. A delightful, wild read that may be my favorite Vorkosigan installment.
