Honestly more like 10/10. I was drawn in from the beginning and fell in love with Iris immediately. The premise was unique and I loved every bit of it. The writing is beautiful and she paints the scenes with her words so effortlessly. Probably my top read so far this year. Excited to start the next.

This book was so unbelievably cute and well written
Iris essentially risked her life to make sure Roman got down. Roman threw his body on top of Iris to protect her. This man put himself between Iris and a grenade like hellooooo?!?!!  Roman quit his job, ended his engagement; and traveled 600 kilometers into war-torn land just to be with her and he read her letters every night 🥹🥹🥹🥹

This was a really good story, I enjoyed Iris and Romans story of their relationship and the story of the war that ends up happening. I found it to be quite emotional sometimes and it was a great one to read since I don’t read books with a war that often. I give it 4.25 stars 😊

I currently have no capacity for poetic prose, and after finishing this book I know that anything I write here will sound like garbage. But if I don't write a review now, I never will.  So here goes.

I haven't cried over a book this much since I read The Song of Achilles a few years ago. I also giggled and kicked my feet like a little girl at some parts. The twists were twisting and the shocks were shocking. The writing was simple yet beautiful, and it made my chest hurt in the best way. It took me a few days to read through it but that's only because life is hectic for me right now. I am always surprised to have powerful feelings while reading, but this story touched me in ways I never thought possible from a book.

I've never been one who enjoys war stories, but the massive response from the social media book communities finally convinced me to give it a try, and I'm so very glad I did.

The magical and fantastical elements woven through the story were just enough to make it feel almost real. Like I could look around a corner and find a little piece of magic in my own life. I think this has to do with it being more of a character study than focusing on the fantasy. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of plot. But the way Ross guides the reader through the story was gentle, like I was a leaf floating down a stream. Eventually the eddies and the rapids came, and the prose shifted accordingly to draw every emotion from my heart until it was bled dry.

I am completely drained and yet surprisingly replenished. Strangely, this story has given me hope of a future filled with love. Dreams of romance now dance around me, asleep and waking.

A small part of me knows I should take a break, but... I've already started the second book.
