I said some variation of "ew!" out loud many, many times during my reading of this book. It's wonderfully gory but just as atmospheric and eerie. This story easily spans a few horror subgenres with elements of action, folk, and bits of comedy here and there. It's long but intense and fast paced; I couldn't put it down. Nick Cutter is seriously talented and I'm looking forward to reading his other books.

Cosmic horror; body horror; cult and supernatural themes; slow burn with tension and feelings of dread; ominous and unsettling; atmospheric; not a big fun of the western vibes and the dialogue, and I kept getting confused with jumping timelines; I zoned out a lot, all throughout the book, but I at least started enjoying it more in the second half and I liked the ending.
I'm thinking I may have liked this one better if I had read the physical book rather than the audiobook (also, the pics are pretty epic in the book).

One of my favorite cult horror stories; genuinely freakish eldritch monsters plus a suspenseful cult mystery
