super boring. didn’t like one of the main characters. this could’ve easily been half as long.
i think it’s wild that this is „the first half“ of „one book“
will probably still read the next one in the hopes that it’ll feel like the first two books.

Review contains end of book emotional spoilers, not details
I have never felt as emotional over a book as I have this one - it's a tear-jerker from beginning to end, but it ended so abruptly and in such a way that I just starting sobbing at the implications of the future of our main characters. This solidifies me reading everything this author puts out.

Welcome, Adam Silvera, to the club of Authors Deemed Too Big to Fail so You Don't Need an Editor Anymore. This needed an edit and a sensitivity read. I dread to imagine what the next book is gonna be like, frankly.
A lot of people complain about the co-dependent relationship and the representation of self-harm and, yeah, they are a bit yikes but that's because this is, apparently, what was meant to be the first half of one book. Which just makes me go yikes again because this was 700. pages. long. And it did not need to be.
This was a mess of pacing and painfully slow character development that, because of the abrupt ending, doesn't actually get any closure. And the themes were all over the place too. You're trying to interrogate the flaws in the Deathcast system by talking about suicide and random acts of violence and worldwide events but you set your story in the rise of the COVID pandemic and ... fail to acknowledge the COVID pandemic, despite mentioning the COVID pandemic? Either take it seriously or leave it out, pick a damn side.
I will probably try the next book when (if, given how this one seems to be failing) it comes out but Silvera should've quit while he was ahead because this is a painfully weak addition to the series.

Had me crying in the first 100 pages. I didn't know it was a cliffhanger!
