🍕This is a heartbreaking story about a woman, Elsie who loses her husband, Ben 9 days into their marriage. It is harder when she meets Ben's mother who knew nothing about her, her relationship with her son or their marriage. While the two women did not get off to a great start they slowly find solace in one another through their love for Ben.

🍕Elsie is desperate for love and a family. Reid writes an honest story about grief and loss. It is truly sad and yet, while Elsie as a character is so raw and true, I don't find her or Ben lovable. I tried to care about either of them but I couldn't. I couldn't believe in their love when I read it and that affected my ability to believe anything else (which I know sounds very harsh but it is how I feel).

Ben and Elsie get married after a short few months of dating. They are married for 10 days before Ben gets hit by a car while riding his bike at night and is killed instantly. Elsie then is thrust into grief and feeling unsure of how she should grieve someone she was married to and knew for such a short time. All in all it was a great depiction of the ups and downs of the grieving process and I like that she connects with his mom through each of their journeys in grief. I did find Elsie annoying and bratty at times. I get that she was grieving but it was hard to like her at all.

God. If I could recommend this to anyone I ever knew, it would literally never be enough. If I thought The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was good I was FLOORED by this book. The exploration on loss and grief centered around women and connection through tragedy. I wish I could reread this for the first time again. Chapter 60 on was just waterworks and sobbing.
