3.5 stars. I don't feel like Sloane's issues around Gabe were truly resolved. After the BJ scene with Dex and the dream, I was expecting Sloane to make some kind of grand gesture or something, and while I know he cared about Dex, he just didn't seem to feel as strongly, and I wish Dex wouldn't have been so nice about the whole thing.

Loved this second installment of the Thirds series. Dex is just a breath of fresh air. I love his attitude and fun nature. But he knows when to be serious. You can't help but love him.

Blood & Thunder picks up 4 months after the events of Hell and High Water. Dex and the THIRDS are hunting Isaac Pearce and his Order of Adrasteia Humans 4 Dominance terrorist whack jobs. Dex and Sloane are figuring out their relationship. Well Dex has figured out that he wants to be more than fuck buddies and Sloane has figured out that he has feelings for Dex and that those feelings make him feel even more guilty about Gabe and the possibility that he might be ready to move on.

There is a nice blend of relationship building, sex, humor, plot and action. Isaac first targets a CDC Therian Registration office, then he bombs a Therian Youth Center and it all starts to point back towards the First Gen Recruitment program – the program Sloane (and Ash) was part of. The program that spawned THIRDS – that was more of a research facility as opposed to a youth center. The program from which Pearce is trying to gain access to classified THIRDS information regarding First Gen recruits – information that would be catastrophic if leaked to the general public – damaging reputations and ruining careers – and destroying the THIRDS.

Sloane’s tumultuous past is stirred up, he has plenty of moments of “I’m not worthy” self loathing and he and Dex have plenty of relationship angst (but eventually in the 11th hour he is able to say the word “boyfriend” without losing consciousness – which was sweet). There’s some minor development along the Cael & Ash and Calvin & Hobbs front – a new possible romance is introduced - Hobbs' brother and the good doctor wolf shifter from Dex’s team.

Blood & Thunder ends with the promise of more chaos – a new group of Therian civilian extremists calling themselves the Ikelos Coalition has sprung up to fight the Order, violence is escalating, innocent civilians are getting caught in the crossfire, and there’s a rat in THIRDS (and not the furry cute kind).

Another excellent addition to the THIRDS storyline.
Dex is my favorite character followed closely by Cael.

April 2021 RE-READ

The Audio was a different experience. I'm not sure if it was better though. The action was great and the sex hot but the brooding dialogue was a bit much and often repetitive. On the whole I really liked the book, but there were a few things holding it back (Dex NOT being one of them)

All the things that I found problematic in book #1 continued to grate on me in this book. I have a hard time accepting that a race war was essentially started from one person's disapproval of another's boyfriend? A bit of a reach. I wish Gabe did not feature as strongly in the second book ... again, it impacted chemistry. I liked this books slightly less than book 1 but it is early in the game and I still feel like this series has a lot of potential. I'm enjoy it so far ...
