The heart of the story is what I enjoyed most, which is about dealing with grief. I found, however, the art style to be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes a character's face wouldn't match with the emotion of what they were saying, which was a bit disorienting. I also seemed to fixate on Ella's not getting dirty whilst hiking through snow or a swamp. The monster designs were quite creative and creepy. Though I liked the message at the end of the book - and it made me cry - I wish it had been better integrated with the adventure story that came before.
