Struggled with how to rate this book because there were definitely parts that I really enjoyed and loved. “Boom, Boom, fucking boom.” The hospital scene is definitely the best part of the book. I loved Claire and Joey and Gibsie, so the side characters are great. Johnny is a PitBull, golden retriever who I love, even if he is obsessed with his dick. IYKYK. The writing was easy to read, but….
The writing was also repetitive and seriously needed to be cut back by about 200 pages. And if I read “like a river,” or “whispered” one more time….
I also was very bothered over the fact that Johnny and other members of the rugby team were lusting over Shannon’s literal prepubescent body as she didn’t even have her first period until about 75% into the book. And she was so small with such tiny breasts but the guys were lusting over her perfect lady bits and private parts. The age gap of 15 and 17 was made to be such a big deal, but that didn’t bother me just the fetishizing of her body. I also didn’t like how much the “not like other girls” trope was used.
All that being said, am I going to read the next book? Yes.
Sooo.. I’ll say 3.8 stars.

High schoolers, Johnny Kavanaugh and Shannon Lynch, are from two very different worlds, but both are holding onto a secret of their own that is impacting their lives in terrible ways. When Johnny and Shannon meet, after an accidental rugby incident, Johnny feels a connection between them - a connection he doesn’t want or have time for. Shannon on the other hand, sees their chance meeting as only one thing - the opportunity for Johnny and his teammates to humiliate and hurt her. What unravels is a story of innocence, friendship, love and unfortunately deep pain. This was both really difficult to read and laugh out loud funny at the same time. I wasn’t sure how I was going to vibe with the story after reading some mixed reviews, but it packed such an emotional punch that I was able to get passed some of the questionable aspects that reviewers had noted. It’s been a long time since my teen years, but Walsh’s writing immersed me in the lives of these teens and I didn’t want to let go. Not to mention the cliffhanger ending that had me purchasing the next book immediately! I do suggest checking trigger warnings before reading, as this story deals with some really heavy topics.

wow, just WOW! IDK what I was expecting when I picked up this series, but I was never expecting to become as attached as I am. I picked this up thinking it was going to be a sports romance book set in some boarding school in Scotland, and that's it. Never once was I expecting the emotional connection I would develop with the characters, the plot, and the series as a whole. By the end of the book, I was uncontrollably sobbing and I didn't even realize it. I didn't think that the characters would be younger (15-18 aged), and normally I don't read books with the main characters being so young, but I feel like they seem older than they all are based on what life has thrown at them. SHANNON LYNCH MY GIRL!!! there were so many times where I wanted to yell at her to stand the heck up and FIGHT BACK, but after being
bullied
all her life, I understand why she is so timid and scared of fighting back
her bullies.
She is so strong for putting up with the
abuse
she has been dealing with all her life. I love her and feel so protective of her, and just want to see her live a happy life. Johnny, Johnny, JOHNNY THE MAN THAT YOU ARE!!! He is definitely going on my list of best book boyfriends of all time because, wow, THIS MAN IS IT. From the moment he set foot on the page, I knew that I would fall in love with him. The way that he protects Shannon from the very first few chapters made my heart burst and I am so excited/nervous for the next book, I am hoping he
makes a speedy recovery and is able to get back to the rugby field ASAP as long as he learns how to take care of himself/his body.
Already have book 2 downloaded and cannot wait to start! Also excited to continue the series as I know the following books will follow the rest of the friend group, which I am obsessed with. If I could rate it higher than 5 stars on here, I would, definitely a 6-star read.

LOVED!!

Made me feel all the feels.  Loved the characters and felt the chemistry between them. Even the side characters were interesting and loveable.

Aching game of cat and mouse and it had me twiddling my feet as I read in bed. Had me reading from evening way into the early hours.

Abit scared as the book is so long but I pretty much finished it in one weekend! I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I wasn’t reading - or shut up about it even.

I frantically ran to buy the second book immediately after reading the first.

I haven’t read many books in my life so maybe my rating is inaccurate and I’ll change my mind in future but as it stands this book is a strong 9.5/10 overall. It has some strange / repetitive parts but in my heart I know I loved this book. It has made me excited to be a reader.

I want to hate this book because it broke my heart. But… that’s also why I love it.
