I'm not sure I know how to review this.
My daughter came home with a copy of this for herself,  I'd seen so much about this series, and I just had to join the hype.
I'm so glad I did.
I thought that maybe I would be too old for this book with it being classed as a YA novel. However, there is a lot of content I would class as adult themes.
I haven't read a book of 800 pages for a long time or even ever actually..... but it really didn't feel like that. I enjoyed reading every bit of it and just wanted to see how delicate Shannon and her siblings' lives were going to pan out......so willing that all will be ok. Then Johnny!!, I like him and his friends. There are characters I loved and characters that I really didn't (understatement!!). There were funny moments that had me giggle and smile whilst reading. Also, there were lots of moments that were  heartbreaking.
I would advise checking out trigger warnings.
I finished this book and was so glad I bought the whole series as it is essential to read the next. Definitely be committed to reading the whole series.
I'm so glad I've joined the hype of this series.

I love everything in this book including Johnny Kavanagh, his parents, his gobshite friends and Shannon like the river also Joey the hurler 🫶🏻 to her mam and her dad go f yourself because neither of u deserve to be called human, let alone worthy of being her parents!

The story grabbed me and I can’t wait to read the next book. However, the writing is a bit off-putting. Something about the over-explanation of certain scenes makes it not quite 4 star. Hopefully book 2 will be an improvement.

I would have liked this book much more had it been a lot shorter. This book was very repetitive with the same situations bringing the same outcomes and no progress being made. Gibsie was easily the best character in this book and the only one that seemed to think clearly. I really liked Johnny but Shannon had little character development and wouldn’t let Johnny explain anything causing unnecessary problems that could have been solved 100 pages ago.

Also why is Shannon dropping to her knees to be able to see Johnny. I understand she cares about him but you are in a crowd of people, please stand up, it’s embarrassing.

I think I will love the rest of this series and am really excited to continue. There were definitely some beautiful moments in this book. I just felt majority of the progress was made in the last 5% of the book. I definitely would have loved it if there wasn’t so much repetition in the rest of the book

Jesus this book is intense. I wish the author would have a content warning ANYWHERE before you read the book.

This reads like a wattpad fic. Jhonny’s chapters are all very explicit and sexual in nature (which I hope isn’t how men irl think/process). It’s just a very strange book, I can’t put it into words.

Honestly the explicit descriptions of physical abuse were too extreme. I’m not a sensitive girl when it comes to reading about dark subjects, I actually somewhat enjoy it. But this was genuinely too much and felt unnecessary.

I would have been more likely to continue with the book if it was less explicitly written out. Like the author literally describes in DETAIL how the FMC is physically abused daily + the aftermath of the bruising. Is that really necessary in a hurt/comfort romance book?

I can’t recommend this book to anyone. It isn’t even a romance book, just a book about abuse.

honestly... no words will ever be able to describe what it was like to read this story. what we feel when we read it is something that can only be understood by living it.

the depth in their personalities and in their backstories just makes it easier for you to relate to each and every one of them. watching these characters fall in love, face their fears, protect each other... it does something to you.

you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be happy, and you'll feel like screaming. you'll be torn apart only to be put back together. you'll hopefully find your new family in them, and you won't be able to let them go... because they are for keeps. ♡
