When I finished the Touchstone trilogy I was not ready to leave the world within its pages, and so gladly dove into the Gratuitous Epilogue, and enjoyed it even as it was precisely as its title states rather than a story in its own right. Perhaps I would have liked this next addition more if I had read it closer in time to the others.

To be fair, the author is very upfront about this being a "slice-of-life" piece rather than a novel in and of itself. But as much as I appreciate the writing, the story itself quite bored me. I was interested enough for the first, I don't know, 30% maybe? Then I had to force myself to continue it. What I DID appreciate about it were the references from Earth's geek culture, interests that I share with the main character.

This is, if you want to understand just how different Laura's POV is, in no shape or form a stand alone from the Touchstone books.

Laura views Muina, the Setari, Selkie and the Taren society entirely differently then Cassandra (her daughter) because she has a very different place in it.

As much as I love Cass' style, Laura is probably closer to how I would react. Likely helps I'm closer to her age then Cass'.

Also dude Laura and her sister Sue would SO BE my sister Tegan and I.

I liked this much better than Gratuitous Epilogue. It's told from Cassandra's mom's POV, and things are pretty peaceful on Muina by the time she emigrates, so this isn't an action-packed story. It focuses on family and building new connections. The end is a bit of an OMG moment, and I wonder if Host will continue the story in that direction.
