I read Year of the Flood first, and had hoped that this would fill in some gaps but I found Oryx and Crake lacking in any real substance. Basically it just tells the story of human greed through the corporate lens and also personally through Jimmy’s relationship with Crake. Oryx is barely in it and when she is, she is just some fantasy girl which I felt was disappointing coming from Atwood, who has a proven record of writing such strong male and female characters.
Even though Year of the Flood got much worse reviews from people who read it in the correct order, I can’t help feeling like Oryx and Crake is the real let down. I don’t feel anything for these characters with the exception of Jimmy.

I went in wanting to like this series. This...was not a strong start and I don't really want to pick up the other books now, honestly. This book was depressing af, however prescient it was at the time of publication, especially considering all the climatological catastrophes and the Covid epidemic we've recently gone through recently. The main character, Jimmy/Snowman, wasn't at all likeable for me. Neither was Crake. I wanted more of Oryx, though her screen time was limited to "sex object" and nothing much else besides, which seems a disservice to her own statements to Jimmy/Snowman as a character within the book. The book picked up a little in last quarter, but not enough to really make me want to look into the rest of things, or to enjoy the book as a whole.

This book gives me a weird sense of nostalgia, I read it for the first time at 17/18 and it was my first foray into speculative fiction.

I think it's the perfect combo of speculative fiction, interesting writing, characterization, intriguing plot, and weirdness.

The only bad thing about this book is that you can never get the first reading experience back once you know what happened to the world.
