A romance with magic and mystery. It almost feels like Marske put Alexis Hall’s Spires series in a blender with India Holton’s books to result in a charming (badum bump), emotionally intelligent mystery involving well-developed characters (something that seemed to trouble Holton in her first novel; still working through the rest . . . and I digress). I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the rest of the story plays out.

Also, know that the torture elements are most prominent at the beginning and you’ll be able to follow the rest of the story easily if you skip right over it.

so incredibly well-written! light-hearted but not inconsequential, delicately funny without being a farce, and genuinely delightful to read. any book that discusses liminality contends for a central place in my heart, but this one takes the cake. also, historical queers combined with a really intricate and thoughtful magical system–i may never, ever shut up about this book. i'm in love with miss adelaide morrissey. now on to book two, immediately!

This was such a fun read and I found it pretty fast paced. I loved the world building and escaping into this book for a bit. The magic system was cool, especially Flora’s! I found it took a while to fully understand the characters but the plot device of solving a mystery was cute. Overall enjoyable read!
