The book cover almost put me off reading this, despite being a big fan of other Ilona Andrews books.
Boy am I glad I gave it a chance though, I enjoyed it.

Burn for Me took me by surprise in a good way! I listened to the audiobook and wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. It’s got that fast-paced, snappy vibe of an Alex Rider book, only the hero’s a 25-year-old woman stuck in a magically charged mess!

Nevada Baylor is clever, determined, and so fiercely loyal to her family it’s heartwarming. I particularly loved how her whole crew rallies behind her, even when things get dangerous. That said, she sometimes tries to shield them too much, and I couldn’t help wishing she’d lean on them more, especially her mum.

The plot is well written and easy to get swept up in, full of action, magic, and a slow burn romance that simmers along nicely. It’s witty and entertaining, although there were moments where Nevada’s inner voice started to feel a bit like word salad as there was lots of back-and-forth about whether she should be attracted to Connor “Mad” Rogan. I appreciated that she
doesn’t fall into the trap of thinking she can change him, and recognises that, for all his charm and power, he’s got a darker streak.
The story drops hints that feel a bit heavy-handed, and there are a few threads I reckon will be explored in later books.

Overall, it’s a fun read with some sharp banter and memorable family dynamics. I wouldn’t call the world building groundbreaking, but it works well enough to carry the story. If you’re after something light, a bit romantic, and packed with action, I’d say this one’s worth a look.

Spice level: 2.5
(Romance with plenty of sexual tension and foreplay, with explicit language, but no sex ... yet!)

I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I went in knowing nothing. And fell in love with both FMC and MMC. The prologue has me so intrigued for the next book

4.75 stars This is a better start compared to the Kate Daniels series. More easily digestible and fun.

It starts normal with Nevada investigating a case where Liz has a cheating husband and she makes sure she is safe. The author does a great job of showing what kind of person Nevada is when she stands up for her when it all goes crazy. I love how big and considerate her family is. How supportive they are when things get tough.

“Is your mom okay?” Grandma asked. “She was in a funk earlier.”
“She’s fine,” I told her. “She just misses Dad, that’s all. I’ve got a question for you.”

I love how they read each other and then give space and their relationship with food is so healthy. They invite strangers to join in and include them in conversarion.

When given the Adam Pierce case, she decides that she will ensure that her family is well taken care of and stands by her family and her fam does all it can to support her.
Spoiler like when they divide the workload on researching ancient jewelry that helps increase power to make sure that each area is covered and they all do a good job about it

Even the arguments are passionate because you can see there is a lot of love there and fear for losing each other

The humuor is what had me coming back.
A guilt trip. Unfortunately for Grandma, I grew up with four younger siblings. Guilt tripping was sometimes the only reason anything got cleaned in our house. “Grandma, why don’t you knit?”
“What?”
“Why don’t you knit? All grandmas knit.”
