I just didn't like the way this was written. It was an author telling you a story through the main character's perspective. There was very little world building. And the plot was not interesting. The MMC was a boundary pusher which is never okay.
I freaking love this book! Reread in 2023

So I’ve come to realize I LOVE Ilona Andrews when it comes to urban fantasy! I can’t recall how I was introduced to urban fantasy but he/she was the first author I read from and when it comes to urban fantasy and their minds are insane! The reason why I say he/she is because Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team! How cool is that! Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Which seriously adds to the stories they create. The fantasy aspect and world building and the history behind the stuff is crazy well written.
In this book we meet Nevada who’s only “magic ability” is basically she is a human lie detector. Because of this ability she’s crazy good at her job which is that she is a private detective. When she is pulled in by her “boss” to bring in someone who is suspected of killing a police officer and injuring his wife and child, Nevada refuses. Due to pretty much forcing her to take the job she does in order to protect her family and her livelihood.
Enter Connor “Mad” Rogan. Mad Rogan is in search of an accomplice to the crime, a nephew or cousin of his. He does some stupid things in order to try and find this accomplice and ends up joining forces with Nevada.
Together they work on finding this bad guy who has a special talent for fire. And is able to do crazy things with his ability. He was an interesting character and I enjoyed his narcissism and wanted to punch his family because I completely blame them for this guy turning out the way he did. moving on….
I absolutely love their writing style and story telling. Seriously. I love the sarcastic, witty, strong female protagonist. I enjoying the complex, extensive world building and back stories/ histories with this book among their other books.
Overall I really did enjoyed the story.
Sexual Content: /moderate/heavy (a lot of innuendos etc. no actual sex-surprising especially when you look at the cover)
Language: moderate/Heavy
Violence: Heavy
Drugs/Alcohol: mild
LGBTQ: none

This is technically my second re read, but like always, Rogan is too hot for his own good lololol
Ugh where to start. Nevada is perfect. I think she is the most level-headed FMC I’ve ever read. I think everything about this book is great, though I’m hoping Rogan gets a little more sociopathic as the series goes on lol.
And the social commentary! So well done.
