The book had the bones. Luca Guadagnino turned them into art.

Movie was so much better. Lee’s death wasn’t impactful in the slightest, the writing style often felt like it jumped around place to place and didn’t connect well, and overall it just left me really disappointed :((

Omg this was not at all what I was expected obviously the ending broke my heart, but overall was such a good story and always had me at the edge of my seat wondering what was about to happen next.

This is a very rare thing for me to say but I actually think I preferred the movie to the book. I found it easier to connect with the characters in the film because the film had a very heavy focus on the romance between Lee and Maren. Maybe it’s my own fault for watching the film first but I was hoping to see a lot more romance in the book. I also strongly prefer the ending of the film to the ending of the book. In my opinion the movie’s ending was a lot more emotional and impactful and I quite honestly didn’t like the way the book ended. I didn’t hate the book though. There were a few redeeming factors but I honestly just think the film was done better. The film gave us 3 central characters and a good emotional story and that more than what I can say for the book.

(I think this is the longest review I’ve ever written lmao)

initially, I was excited about what seemed like stronger themes in this book (at least compared to the film) but I was ultimately let down by how messy it ended up and how little payoff some of the plot developments got. I don’t feel like any of the characters—especially maren—had significant development and every character had the same voice, to a noticeable and aggravating degree. clearly written for a younger audience, but the prose sometimes veers juvenile.
