This is a pleasant enough cotton candy adventure romance. Alex and her friends are all rich, clever, and lovely, with attitudes and interests more suitable to a contemporary setting which sometimes get them into trouble. Their only other problem in life is an excess of suitors and a disinterest in marriage. The murder and intrigue adds a little spice to the formula, except it's all very predictable.

The Season hits most of the Regency romance cliches, but the only one that I found particularly annoying is the "characters love reading Jane Austen books in a Regency romance." Even most of the men have read the novels and Alex has read P&P at least three times.

The ending sets up for an ongoing series but there is no sequel. Sad, I wanted more cotton candy.

As the daughter of a duke and duchess, Lady Alexandra has certain social obligations. Now, at the age of 17, she must participate in her first season and endeavor to gain a husband. The problem is, Alex does not want a husband, and does not want to be a part of the season. Together with her two best friends, Ella and Vivi, she experiences all that society has to offer. However, not all is right with the upper classes. The Earl of Blackmoor has met with a suspicious riding accident, and the young new Earl suspects foul play. Alex works to solve the mystery while also puzzling over her newfound feelings for her old family friend.

The Season is a light, fun read that transports the reader to Regency England. The dialog between Alex, her friends, and her brothers is lighthearted, playful and flows well. The romance that grows during the story develops organically, and makes the reader long for it to come to the inevitable conclusion. The villain was fairly obvious from the beginning, but there was one twist that I didn't see coming until it was finally revealed. All in all, a very enjoyable story, and one that fans of Jane Austen will appreciate.

I've been eying The Season by Sarah Maclean for quite some time now, and when I was searching for something fun to read on Kindle the other day I finally got around to purchasing it.

#1 rule for this book: Don't let the cover turn you off! (It's nice, but i found it a bit weird and nothing like how I pictured the three best friends).

I'm a big fan of Historical and YA as I've mentioned in my Haunting Violet Review, and I thought that The Season would be a nice fun read as it being both of those genres.

Yes, once again, this book surprised me... seems to be that way with a lot of books lately.

Alexandra is a great character along with her two best friends Ella and Vivi; They are all independent, beautiful young women, with only one problem... they don't want to get married.

This is an adventurous tale about three young women not wanting to bend to the ways of society in the upcoming Season in London, England, with an extra bonus of murder, mystery and of course, romance.

I thought that it was great that the girls ended up solving a crime that the men couldn't and I would love to see a book about Vivi and Ella finding their own happiness, but it seems Sarah Maclean has no plans to travel down that road.

Which is a massive shame, as they would be excellent.

i really loved this book, it was a great mystery and a wicked romance! it's weird to hear a romantic story told in those days because our rules and thoughts of other people are different

If I’d realised this was YA I probably wouldn’t have bothered. It was an easy read and perfectly pleasant, but I didn’t enjoy this as much as I have other of Sarah MacLean’s books. It’s also possible that I preferred her other work because I read those in audiobook format whereas this one I read with my eyeballs.

I really liked this book. It seemed to be a little slow going at first and I didn't finish it as quickly as I typically finish books. The storyline was pretty typical and there weren't as many twists and turns as I think there could have been, but the basis of the story, which was the three friends, was very cute. The relationship between Alex and Gavin was quite adorable and I said "aww" a few times. :)

This was a great read! I read the first half on the plane to Hawaii - and then finished it a few nights later. I really enjoyed this book. It had cool characters and there was a little mystery going on. It was predictable, but I enjoyed it just the same. I will prolly re-read this again sometime! :)

P.S. This is what I had hoped the Gemma Doyle books would be more like! (But they were NOT!)

Well this decided it. YA is definitely my genre, I loved Sarah's young adult historical romance so much more than her three adult historical romances I just burned through... and I liked those a lot so this is saying something. I'd give 5 stars but I'm hardwired to never give 5 stars, ever. So 4 stars is pretty damn excellent.
The story is so very fun, it's full of espionage, French spies, Seasonal Balls (hence the title), romance, young love, strong females, friendships and defining yourself in a male dominated world and era.
Beautifully written, one of my favourite's of the year.

I remember seeing this one long ago, and wanting to read it. Mostly cos it was a YA his rom.

Alex is a smart young woman filled with opinions. Not a good thing when you are about to have your first season. She is headstrong. Has 3 annoying brothers and 2 besties. What more can a girl want.

The two best friends Ella and Vivi sadly do not get enough room in the book. It did feel like this was a novel that should have had follow ups. You know, when Ella and Vivi finds love too. But I say they found it with Alex's brothers...what? I want HEAs since there are no more books ;)

There is also Gavin, the next door neighbor who suddenly is a man, and no longer that 4th pretend brother.

Balls, dresses and drama. Someone is after Gavin (and not to marry him). Of course I still say they should have told their fathers and let it be, but hey, I did say she was headstrong.

I get that it was YA, but she did roll her eyes a bit too much. It felt too teen, too modern, too disrespectful.

Conclusion:

But it was a fun tale and it would have worked just as well as a adult his rom. Just then insert more passion and less eye rolling ;)

Narrator

I do like Baker's voice. She is cheerful! And perfect for YA
