I wouldn't have finished this if I hadn't used a BOTM credit on it. The entire story felt like nonsense "cult! religion!" BS and the only way to enjoy this is to suspend all disbelief and strap in, bucko. The main character has always held the key to the mystery, couldn't remember, but does at the perfect moment? OK. The kidnapped children are totally cool and comfortable with their situation? OK. The police in this other state are allowing a non-police officer to tag along and interview suspects? OK. Incredible how perfectly everything works from the very beginning. UGH

This book was dark and gruesome. It was written in a fast-paced manner, with lots of action to move the plot along, but it felt slower-paced to me as there was so much happening and so many characters to track that I felt I had to process everything at a different pace. It made it hard to keep up with the story. However, this was disturbing and the writing style itself was strong. The ending, which I managed to only somewhat predict, was fucking ominous in the best way.
