this feels like if you fed a ton of popular horror movies to a AI generator and it spit out this book that had too many storylines, a million clichés, and didn’t make a ton of sense. i got this for my botm and was very disappointed :/

*also this is not a horror book like it says it is, it’s a thriller

Hiding this behind a spoiler in case any of the nonsense spelled out below is somehow a spoiler.

DNF @ 50% because I can’t take another second of this shitshow.

An executed serial killer + a drug addict detective with holes in her memory from childhood + her estranged psychologist husband + her dead parents (dad was the one who caught the now-dead serial killer) + her kidnapped daughter + a new serial killer + a house of horrors + creepy animal masks + a cult (or more than one cult?) + a dude with multiple personalities + whothefuckknows what else is going to be thrown into this mess.

This was terrible.

This felt similar to an Alex North novel- which is a good thing. It was so thought out. There were many small details that sometimes get overlooked were explained. It was complicated enough to keep you guessing and engaged, but not so complicated it felt farfetched and unrealistic. I will definitely be looking up more books by this author!

The twists were tightly wound with lots of different threads. I struggled with the main character’s constant reluctancy to figure out her past. The book packs some powerful scare. Might want a light.
