I was really surprised by this book. I normally don't like many male authors, but James has created each character with a level of depth its a lovely unexpected work. I am most amazed by the female characters he's written. They are not surface level, they are layered and multifaceted. To have a book that handle different disorders, addiction, and trauma seemingly well researched all culminate into such a massive plot and so much deception was a wild ride. I am now keeping Markert on my radar and am starting Mister Lullaby. We shall see how much I really like his writing!
(Also the use of religious imagery and psychosis was well done in my opinion. It really shows how religion can turn into something sinister so fast and if someone is charismatic enough they can corrupt a following. Cult leaders and ideology has always been fascinating)

Some of the plot elements made zero sense, but the overall experience was good! Definitely an interesting story.

I really enjoyed the concept and storyline. It was involved and intricate with creepy cult elements and very dark themes. It definitely didn’t feel like a horror novel to me, more like a dark thriller with police procedural and psychological analysis talk. There were soo many characters to keep track of that the beginning was a little tough to get through. Although i really liked the twists and tangled web of the mystery, i was taken out of it by how confusing things were at some points. Not only that but the main characters in this needed to communicate with each other a lot more! Overall a good read for the season and I really did like the cult aspect.

This is a wild story, and I probably laughed more than I should have, but I had so much fun reading it! It is a great horror novel that is just sane enough to land in the right side of crazy (mostly because of how amazing the writing is). I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone, but if you like the genre it is a great read!

This was a super fascinating and creepy book! Lots of weird psychological storylines and a LOT going on. It is a bit of a slow burn. But it has so much detail and side plots too that it keeps your interest. The ending makes me hope that maybe there will be a sequel!!!
