They say kill your darlings and this book is an example of what happens when you don’t follow that advice. This book crams in every cop show cliche you can think of and as a result different plot points felt like they were fighting for attention which just killed their pay off.
Is this about a horrible serial killer? An (apparently) satanic cult? A troubled detective married to the job? Weird and unexplained supernatural phenomena that barely contribute to the plot?
The answer to all of the above is yes. As a result this just seems like the kind of story a cop in the D.A.R.E. Program would’ve told as a cautionary tale in the 80’s.  I still don’t understand why any of the more recent crimes happened and I still have loads of questions.
Was Mother expecting for the weird cult ritual to work? If so why, she seemed to have no other ties to the occult. Why was the cult satanic? All of the characters including the villains seemed to be very Catholic. How did this cult get to be 100+ people? How did no one notice Noah’s personalities were were the same as his fellow victims who died??? What was up with the random telepathy????? Is this supposed to be a grounded, gritty novel or not?
However this was still a pretty addicting plot and the imagery was nice and spooky, so not all bad!

listen. that was CRAZY. but i just do not fuck with mysticism or whatever weird mind connection those three had. would have been stellar without that detail, but unfortch the whole plot sorta hinged on it.

also, wild to me how lovingly the catholic church was handled while simultaneously highlighting it being deeply fucked up, but i guess i don’t really get that about actual religious believers irl either.

Libby audio. Disjointed, no likeable characters. Better DID books out there. Leaned a little to heavily on DID to move the plot.
