I became so interested in Shannon Boodram and the way she thinks after seeing her in a video about polygamy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAE8uQUU4Pw
I searched her up and found out that she wrote a book on an experiment that she had on desire. She selected 5 woman who she worked with to see if she can help them develop dating skills.
I didn't agree with all of the things that she said in the book but did find her experiment interesting! She is such a charming character too :)

there was drama around this book a couple months ago so i decided to check it for myself. as a person who doesn't pursue anything romantically it was interesting to see all these women take their lives in their hand and kill it.

The key takeaway this book is that people are like plants: give them all the same soil/water/sun/fertiliser combo and a lot of them will dry out and wither. Mushrooms don’t need a lot of sun, snakeplants don’t need a lot of water, some plants aren’t outdoorsy — you get the point. I love that metaphor.
So the thing that recommends the book is the two sections in the beginning about finding what sort of ‘plant’ you are, what you need and how to communicate that.
Would recommend: The workbook for learning about yourself used in this book is free and is linked on her website. I found it very useful.
Easy read, more anthological than an advice dump. Good narrative voice, but would prefer her collaborations on Youtube for going in-depth for how people think.

Never in a million years would I have seen myself reading a book like this, but I stumbled upon the video animation of the first chapter on youtube and I was hooked.
Though I wasn’t a fan of some of the techniques mentioned, I still found the advice in this book really valuable. Most of it isn’t even dating specific, there are lots of great tips in here that teach you how to communicate better.
The goal of this book is to help you discover and become the best version of yourself. And even though that sounds super cliche, the methods used and the advice give is not. The author acknowledges that “just being yourself” won’t generally work and it isn’t even beneficial. Instead, Boodram encourages you to work on improving yourself and becoming the version of you that you want to be.
Honestly, Shan Boodram’s expertise shines through the pages of this book and it’s a perfect read for someone that feels like they don’t know themselves/ lacks confidence/ doesn’t know what they’re looking for in a partner/ doesn’t know how to approach people. That being said, the narrative structure of this book makes it an enjoyable read for anyone — thoough it’s important to keep in mind this book focuses on the female dating experience (no matter the sexuality of that female or the relationship structure she prefers)
